The woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum Hausmann) is one of
the most important and economically significant pests of apple
trees. In Afghanistan, particularly in the apple orchards of Daimirad
(Jalga) District of Maidan Wardak Province, severe infestations of
this pest have resulted in significant yield losses and economic
damage. Therefore, this study was conducted based on field
observations and analysis of scientific sources. The field study was
carried out in four apple orchards, where the biological
characteristics, life cycle, and types of damage caused by the
woolly apple aphid were investigated in order to provide scientific
information and appropriate control strategies adapted to local
conditions. The results showed that the woolly apple aphid
produces several generations per year in the study area, and
severe infestations lead to tree weakening and a considerable
reduction in yield. The use of resistant rootstocks, proper
agronomic practices, and the application of Integrated Pest
Management (IPM) approaches are recommended as the most
effective strategies for controlling this pest.
